Our friends at the Football Supporters’ Federation have launched their Safe Standing petition. I’m sure the TFT team, and certainly its readers, are split on standing at football in England. While most of us accept that there was a need for change post-Hillsborough, some of us are vocally in favour of a return to standing and others are less certain of the benefits and feasibility. Regardless of our views, I’d hope most football supporters - the real ones - at least accept that it is time for a sensible, open and informed debate on this very important subject.

Standing was not the issue at the Hillsborough Disaster, the issue was poor policing, crowd control and perimeter fencing, and whilst the up most respect and sensitivity must be shown towards the families of the deceased, standing areas must be brought back in to increase affordability and atmosphere at English stadia.
